Sage

Sage -Salvia officinalis- is a plant of the Laminaceae family which are a small evergreen shrub with quadrangular branches. Its leaves are opposite, finely toothed, covered with down, petiolate, oval-lanceolate, thick and wrinkled. Appearing around June-July, inflorescences are vertical with flowers carried in verticils from 2 or 4. Sage can live spontaneously over 15 years and in culture from 5 to 7 years. Sage was already known in acient times for its healing properties. This property explains its name which derives from "Salvo" which in Italian means "to save". The Gauls believed that sage had the ability to heal all diseases and that it acted effectively as a "deterrent" against fever and cough.
